The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has commenced with intense competition, with teams vying for supremacy. After several matches, the standings are beginning to take shape, revealing potential contenders and teams needing to regroup.
Australia's captain Pat Cummins leads his team off the field after a victory against West Indies.
Australia and England have emerged as early frontrunners, both securing a perfect 100% points percentage after dominating their initial encounters. Sri Lanka follows in third place, buoyed by their series result against Bangladesh.
India, however, faces an uphill battle after a disappointing start. Despite displaying resilience, the team must address critical areas to improve their standing.
India's first match was full of fighting spirit, but they did not manage to grab the win. The batting lineup was filled with 5 centurions, but still ended up losing the match. England chased 371 runs, thanks to Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who had an impressive partnership in the opening. Joe Root and Jamie Smith also helped to secure the win. India had a middle-order collapse and dropped catches, which made them lose.
Shubman Gill said that the team had chances but didn't take them. He also mentioned that the team was expecting more runs, but the lower order didn't perform as well as they hoped.
The team will shift their focus to the second Test in Edgbaston, to recover from the loss and keep their hopes for the WTC alive.
The WTC cycle began on June 17 with Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh and will continue until the final in 2027.
