Sharan Hegde, the entrepreneur behind The 1% Club and the popular YouTube channel ‘financewithsharan,’ recently announced that his YouTube account was compromised. The breach, revealed via his personal Instagram, led to unauthorized live streams featuring Bitcoin prices.
According to Hegde, the hackers initiated a live stream on his channel that displayed Bitcoin prices soaring to $100,000. He also stated that the hackers wiped the entire content of his YouTube channel. Fortunately, his content was later recovered.
In his post, Hegde recounted the incident: “The hacker took control of the account & started a live stream of Bitcoin prices reaching $100k - without my consent, of course. Within minutes, I got 100s of DMs from you guys informing me about the fact. Thank you so much for alerting me but unfortunately the channel got terminated & I didn't know what to do. My 3 years of hard work just disappeared right in front of my eyes.”
Following this incident, it's crucial to reinforce the security of your YouTube account. YouTube's official support page offers valuable advice to help users protect themselves from such breaches.
Here are some key steps to consider:
Create a Strong Password: A robust password is your first line of defense. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols to make it harder to crack. Avoid easily guessable information and never share your password with anyone.
Regular Security Checkup: Google provides a built-in Security Checkup feature. This tool scans your passwords and account for potential vulnerabilities, guiding you through necessary security enhancements.
Enable 2-Step Verification: Adding 2-Step Verification (also known as multi-factor authentication) provides an extra layer of security. This feature requires a verification code from your phone or another device in addition to your password when logging in from a new device.
Remove Suspicious People from Your Account
Remove Sites and Apps You Don’t Need
Update Your Software and Back Up Your Account
Protect Against Suspicious Messages & Content
Manage Access Requests Properly: YouTube allows you to grant different levels of access to your channel. Assign permissions carefully, only giving trusted users the access they truly need. By implementing these strategies, content creators can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to account hacking and safeguard their valuable work.
