Harvansh Singh Pangalia, the India U-19 wicketkeeper, lives by a simple yet profound motto: "Trying to do better." This mantra, drawn from an iconic scene in the Spider-Man movie, fuels his ambition and shapes his approach to the game.
A confessed Marvel enthusiast, Harvansh finds inspiration in the exchange between Peter Parker and Dr. Otto Octavius in the 2004 film, Spider-Man 2. When labeled "lazy" despite his brilliance, Peter simply responds, "Trying to do better." This resonated deeply with the young cricketer.
"There's something about that scene, that dialogue...The answer gives me goosebumps," Harvansh shared.
This mantra has translated into remarkable performances on the field. In a practice match against Young Lions Invitational XI, Harvansh unleashed an explosive batting display. Arriving at the crease with the score at 251/7, he blazed his way to a century off just 52 balls, smashing nine sixes and propelling India to a formidable 442/9.
The innings sparked a social media frenzy, with friends and family sharing reels and memes celebrating Harvansh as India's next batting sensation. Videos of his towering sixes flooded social media feeds.
Despite the attention, Harvansh remains grounded. He recalls struggling initially during the innings.
"I was struggling. The first five balls I faced, I was all at sea, failing to connect a single one. I was batting on 13 off 23 balls...But then something happened...you could say I was possessed!" he recounted with a laugh.
Harvansh's journey began in Gandhidham, a small town in Gujarat. He grew up watching his father, Damandeep Singh, and uncle, Kunwarajeet Singh, both wicketkeepers, play cricket. While his family, including his father, now resides in Canada, Harvansh remains in Gandhidham with his mother. His father, a truck driver, moved to Canada in 2017 to provide for his family.
Harvansh speaks poignantly about the sacrifices his parents have made. "Whenever I step out to bat, I see the faces of my mother and father...They have sacrificed so much for me," he said. He dreams of bringing his father back to India and is determined to make it happen.
Beyond Spider-Man, Harvansh draws inspiration from cricketing heroes like Yuvraj Singh, admiring his resilience and World Cup-winning mentality. He also idolizes the late Kobe Bryant, whose "Mamba Mentality" and relentless work ethic serve as a constant source of motivation.
Harvansh believes that mentality and self-belief are crucial for success at the highest level. He aspires to play Test cricket for India, influenced by Virat Kohli's emphasis on the format's importance in earning respect.
While acknowledging the success of his teammates Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who have already secured IPL contracts, Harvansh remains focused on his own journey. "They are my friends...They do inspire all of us, but everyone has a different path," he said confidently. "Mera bhi time aayega (My time will come as well)."
India U19 is set to face England U19 in the first Youth ODI at Hove on Friday.
