England Defeat: Gambhir Refuses to Hype Pant's Centuries, Stresses Team Performance

Wednesday - 23/07/2025 05:04
Following India's shocking Test defeat against England, head coach Gautam Gambhir downplayed individual achievements, despite centuries from Rishabh Pant and others. He emphasised the team's failure to defend a massive score, highlighting England's record chase led by Ben Duckett. Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been released from the squad as injury concerns eased.

Following India's loss to England in the first Test at Headingley, head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasized the importance of team performance over individual achievements. Despite India scoring five centuries, including two by vice-captain Rishabh Pant, the team was unable to secure a victory, leading Gambhir to temper any celebrations of personal milestones.

Gautam Gambhir's focus remains on the team's collective performance rather than individual accolades.

When questioned about Pant's impressive centuries and their significance in light of the defeat, Gambhir, in a statement reported by PTI, dismissed the notion. He stated, "There are three more centuries as well. Those are big positives as well. Thank you," highlighting his commitment to the team's overall performance rather than singling out individual accomplishments.

Despite amassing a substantial 835 runs across both innings, India failed to defend a target of 371 in the final innings. England achieved a historic chase, propelled by Ben Duckett's quickfire 149 and significant contributions from Zak Crawley and Joe Root.

Notably, this match marked an unprecedented event in Test cricket, as it was the first time a team had lost a Test match despite scoring five centuries.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Harshit Rana has been released from the squad before the second Test, according to TimesofIndia.com reports. Rana, who was initially included as injury cover, was not with the team when they left Leeds for Birmingham. Gambhir confirmed that there were no longer any injury concerns, prompting Rana's return home.

“I haven’t spoken to the chairman of selectors yet, but there was a bit of a niggle in the group.

That’s why we wanted him as backup. But at the moment, everything looks fine,” Gambhir had earlier said during the press conference.

With the second Test at Edgbaston scheduled for July 2, India has a brief period to regroup. England currently leads the five-match series 1-0, placing pressure on the Indian team to respond. For Gambhir, the focus remains on achieving results, with performance taking precedence over individual reputation.
